Orchestra

Welcome to Mandolin New England. We are a community orchestra based in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, dedicated to keeping the sound of fretted instruments alive and thriving. The group brings together players who value tradition, enjoy learning, and want to be part of something steady and musical. If you have a mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar, or bass, there is a place for you here.

Mandolin New England traces its inspiration to Joseph Pizzitola, a musician and teacher who kept mandolin music going through times when it nearly disappeared from the American landscape. His commitment showed how powerful these instruments can be when people gather to play them. Today our orchestra continues that spirit, building a friendly, supportive space where players at many levels can grow.

Our mission is simple. We aim to inspire, educate, and connect mandolin players through regular rehearsals, concerts, workshops, and occasional lectures. The ensemble performs arrangements that span traditional folk, early music, classical repertoire, and modern pieces written or arranged for mandolin orchestra. The goal is to give players a broad musical experience while keeping the tradition moving forward.

We welcome newcomers. There are no auditions and no expectations beyond a willingness to practice and participate. Whether you have years of experience or you are returning to your instrument after a long break, you’ll find patient guidance and a warm, down-to-earth group of musicians. The rehearsals are relaxed but purposeful, with plenty of room to learn at your own pace.

Mandolin New England performs throughout western Massachusetts at community venues, seasonal events, and special concerts. Our audiences include local arts supporters, families, and people who simply enjoy hearing instruments they rarely encounter. These performances help sustain the tradition and give players the chance to share what they’ve learned.

As a nonprofit organization, Mandolin New England relies on community support. Donations help fund rehearsals, print music, purchase equipment, and bring our concerts to more people throughout the region. Anyone who joins or contributes becomes part of a long story of keeping mandolin music alive.

If you’re interested in joining the orchestra, have questions, or want to learn more, we’d be glad to hear from you. You can contact us anytime, and we’ll help you get started.
